The Kiel Canal
The Kiel Canal is 98.7 km long and the longest canal in Germany. It starts at the Elbe river in Brunsbüttel and extends to the Kieler Förde close to Holtenau. It connects the North Sea coast to the Baltic Sea coast and significantly shortens travelling time for ships going from the North Sea to the harbours in the Baltic Sea. The canal is roughly 162 metres wide and about 11 metres deep.
‘Atrium’ – Museum at the lock
The museum at the lock illustrates the history and importance of the Kiel Canal. Using model ships, landscape models and informative displays, the museums explains the building and usage of the Canal. The models give a great insight into the technical workings.
This is a great place to learn about the importance of and experience the most-used artificial German water ways.
