Friedrichstadt

Friedrichstadt is often decribend as ‘Dutch’ city. The town impresses with its gables and canals and is a relaxing place with many sights to discover.
The tiered gables and canals make even Dutch visitors feel at home. This town at the North Sea coast is very special and if embark on some time travel during your visit, you can learn more about the people and events that have shaped it.
Museum „Alte Münze“ (Old Coin)
Not a single coin was minted in the „Alte Münze“. It was built in 1626 as storage building for the patrician Adolph van Wael. In the past centuries, it has been used as church, library and tourist information. After comprehensive renovation in 1995, it now houses the local museum. The Renaissance building is known as one of the most beautiful buildings in Schleswig Hostein.
Memorial Former Synagogue
In the 17th century, Jewish people were given the right to settle. In 1846/47, the built a synagogue in the inner harbour. Friedrichstadt became known as the ‘Town of Tolerance’. Roughly 400 Jews lived in Friedrichstadt until 1938.
After a renovation in 2003, the building is now used for cultural events and houses a permanent exhibition about the history of local Jewish community.
Canals and small boats
Friedrichstadt is also known as ‘Little Amsterdam’ or ‘Little Venice’, mostly due to the numerous canals that permeate the town. Just like in Amsterdam, you can discover the town on boat from the canals. You can even create your own journey and rent a electric boat, a pedal boat or a canoo.
