Seal Centre Friedrichskoog
The seal centre in Friedrichskoop at the North Sea Coast is a great destination. It is 46 kilometres away from the holiday apartments and can be reached in 40 minutes in the car.
In a nationwide unique setup, visitors can observe the common seal and the grey seal living in a shared enclosure on land and water.
Five common seals and two grey seals live in a seawater enclosure of 800 m². They cannot return to the wild for a variety of reasons.
The species of seals is divided into three families:
- True Seals
(Lat.: Phocidae, 19 species) - Eared Seals
(Lat.: Otariidae, 15 species) - Walrus
(Lat.: Odobenidae, one species)
The seal centre Friedrichskoop is he only authorised centre in Schleswig-Holstein to take on abandoned or diseased seals. Rearing and rehabilitation of seal pups is the main aspect of the work over summer.

Pups which are separated from their mother within the first few weeks of their life are called ‚Heuler‘ (= howlers) in German, as they are howling for their mother.
Any discovered pups are brought to the centre as soon as possible and they are raised in conditions as close to nature as possible. Sick pups are treated with a variety of rehabilitation measures.
There is no direct access to this area to avoid disturbing the pups, but videa cameras and a viewing platform allow great insights.
